Yankees' relentless dominance of Twins of AL Central calls competitive balance into question

Most concerning, however, not just for the Twins, but for Selig and the other major league poobahs who watch in dread as the Yankees threaten to again wreak havoc on their hopes and dreams for competitive balance, is that there really is this much of a gulf between the American League East and everyone else.

All season long, the Minnesota Twins, with their sparkling new stadium and spunky way of going about their baseball business, flourished in their anointed role of Bud Selig's model franchise. For six months there was this positive vibe about them that suggested the seventh month would be their most wondrous of all, in which all possibilities would be realized.

And then, in a span of four blurry days, the Twins were administered another reality check from the Yankees, a rude reminder of just who really owns October, and it is once more a cold Minnesota winter that beckons. For the second straight year, Ron Gardenhire's crew has been Twinkie-munched in three straight by the Yankees, the fourth time since 2003 that the Bombers have sent the Twins home in the first round.

As 'Peanuts' turn 60, Schulz family plans future

Jeannie Schulz, the cartoonist's widow, said she often hears from people at the Charles M. Schulz Museum in Santa Rosa, Calif., about how well the characters reflect their own feelings.

Brett Zongker, Associated Press/San Francisco Examiner | CA

Good grief, Charlie Brown. The world has certainly changed since the Peanuts were born.
In 60 years, the U.S. sent a man to the moon, survived the Cold War and now has one of the worst economic funks in decades. All that time, Charles Schulz's imaginary gang has been a fixture of newspaper funny pages and grainy holiday TV specials.
Now, his family is working to keep Snoopy, Lucy and the rest alive for generations to come. A handful of new projects is in the works. The first new animated film in five years is set for release next spring called "Happiness is a Warm Blanket, Charlie Brown." ABC just signed on for five more years of airing Charlie Brown holiday specials. A new social media game began on Facebook and Twitter last month to "Countdown to the Great Pumpkin," and the comic strip has made its way to a popular gaming website for millions of children.

Play brings families, friends and communities together; it keeps us fit and makes us smile. Research shows that play is a key element of development and health for individuals of all ages and abilities. Unfortunately, play is being threatened on every front in the U.S. It’s seen as a “children-only” activity, if it’s thought about at all. Furthermore, concerns around inclusive play are primarily discussed among disability experts and are not part of most community agendas.

Please join a group of our nation’s leading experts for a thought-provoking, two-day symposium that examines the importance of play for all ages and abilities. Play for Life: Exploring the Lifelong Benefits of Inclusive Play will reignite your passion for play and inspire new ways to bring that passion to everyone in your community.
