  • Consider economist and political scientist Joseph Schumpeter’s description: the nation “pretends to aspire to peace but unerringly generates war … there was no corner of the known world where some interest was not alleged to be in danger … the whole world was pervaded by a host of enemies.” Sound familiar? He was talking about Ancient Rome. We all know how that turned out.

Nov 10, 2017 | Investigating yourself: a surefire way to never get to the bottom of anything. Of course, in some cases that is exactly the point.

Take the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the headquarters responsible for U.S. military forces deployed on the vast African continent. Last month, Africa—specifically remote Niger—catapulted (however briefly) to the top of American newscasts when four U.S. Army special operations troops were killed in a ferocious ambush. The details remain sketchy but officials quickly blamed the Islamic State of Greater Sahara (ISGS), a loose affiliate of ISIS, though curiously neither al-Qaida nor Islamic State claimed responsibility. Many tactical questions lingered: Did the troops receive a change of mission, were they set up by local village elders, did they have enough air support? Well, this week AFRICOM’s own, two-star chief of staff was appointed to investigate the “incident” in Niger. Certainly, the general will ask and—hopefully—answer those basic tactical questions.

Mr. Fish

Americans had better hope that we are not so exceptional, and that the world will find a diplomatic rather than a military “solution” to its American problem. Our chances of survival would improve a great deal if American officials and politicians would finally start to act like something other than putty in the hands of the CIA.

http://evergreenedigest.org/sites/default/files/Stars%20%26%20Stripes%20Briefs_1.jpgNovember 01, 2017 | As the recent PBS documentary on the American War in Vietnam acknowledged, few American officials ever believed that the United States could win the war, neither those advising Johnson as he committed hundreds of thousands of U.S. troops, nor those advising Nixon as he escalated a brutal aerial bombardment that had already killed millions of people.

As conversations tape-recorded in the White House reveal, and as other writers have documented, the reasons for wading into the Big Muddy, as Pete Seeger satirized it, and then pushing on regardless, all came down to “credibility”: the domestic political credibility of the politicians involved and America’s international credibility as a military power.

Nicolas J. S. Davies is the author of Blood On Our Hands: the American Invasion and Destruction of Iraq. He also wrote the chapters on “Obama at War” in Grading the 44th President: a Report Card on Barack Obama’s First Term as a Progressive Leader.

September 21, 2017 | So if you’re having trouble keeping up, you are meant to believe wholeheartedly that Donald Trump is simultaneously:

  • dangerously incompetent,
  • mentally unstable,
  • a closet white nationalist, and
  • a treasonous Kremlin agent.

You are meant to find a way believe all of these things without seeing any contradiction or absurdity among the lot of them. If the notion that someone can be both politically inept and mentally ill while also simultaneously working as a double agent for another government while also simultaneously covertly plotting to turn America into an all-white ethnostate starts to feel a little incredible to you, you’re meant to seclude yourself within an adamantine media echo chamber and bathe in the waters of Verrit and #TheResistance until it all makes sense again.

http://evergreenedigest.org/sites/default/files/Foreign%20Policy%20Banner_1.jpg

  • For years, the US military has publicly insisted that its efforts in Africa are negligible, intentionally leaving the American people, not to mention most Africans, in the dark about the true size, scale, and scope of its operations there.
  • Is that why they call it an American “battlefield” behind closed doors?

April 14, 2015 | For three days, wearing a kaleidoscope of camouflage patterns, they huddled together on a military base in Florida. They came from US Special Operations Command (SOCOM) and US Army Special Operations Command, from France and Norway, from Denmark, Germany, and Canada: 13 nations in all. They came to plan a years-long “Special Operations-centric” military campaign supported by conventional forces, a multinational undertaking that—if carried out—might cost hundreds of millions, maybe billions, of dollars and who knows how many lives.

Ask the men involved and they’ll talk about being mindful of “sensitivities” and “cultural differences,” about the importance of “collaboration and coordination,” about the value of a variety of viewpoints, about “perspectives” and “partnerships.” Nonetheless, behind closed doors and unbeknownst to most of the people in their own countries, let alone the countries fixed in their sights, a coterie of Western special ops planners were sketching out a possible multinational military future for a troubled region of Africa.

May 24, 2016 | JAY: Welcome back to Reality Asserts Itself on The Real News Network. I'm Paul Jay, in Baltimore. We're continuing our discussion with Roger Waters and Sut Jhally. We're talking about the new film "The Occupation of the American Mind: Israel's Public Relations War in the United States." And you're really going to...I'm not going to introduce the guys again, because you really should go back and watch this from the beginning, cause I think it's a fascinating interview.

http://evergreenedigest.org/sites/default/files/Foreign%20Policy%20Banner_0.jpg

We're going to start off showing a clip. The importance of the next clip that we're going to show you is that even some of the most liberal, major media commentators [inaud.] buy in to the same narrative. Israel's the victim. And [they] seem very reluctant. And some of these people should know better, or really do know better and don't want to say so, including Rachel Maddow.
