What We Lose When We Let Predatory Men Shape The National Conversation

http://evergreenedigest.org/sites/default/files/Matt%20Lauer%20Leaves%20Rockefeller%20Center.jpg

Matt Lauer’s 20-year position at NBC allowed him to frame the way stories about powerful women and Very Bad Men were told — and not told.

  • It is a disturbing thought experiment to look at the media men who have faced allegations of sexual misconduct over the past two months and consider what stories might have been told had women been in their places.

What started out as an information service based on public support has now become a culture of free service. The process is absolutely being abused. A budget is required. Not a huge budget, but a “reasonable” one.

We’ll press the case until we get that.

11/29/2017 | In September 2016, Matt Lauer came under fire for his treatment of then–presidential nominee Hillary Clinton at the NBC Commander in Chief Forum.

The format of the forum had Clinton answering questions for 30 minutes, followed by Donald Trump doing the same. During Clinton’s turn, Lauer focused one-third of that time on seemingly prepared questions about her private email server. He asked tough follow-up questions, and interrupted her answers more than once. By the time a veteran in the audience could ask Clinton a specific question about how she would deploy troops to combat ISIS ― the type of inquiry that would allow her to show Americans her understanding of foreign policy and her concrete plans should she become Commander in Chief ― Lauer cut in before she could answer, asking that her response be delivered “as briefly as you can.”

12/03/17 | The Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) plan to scrap net neutrality rules governing how internet service providers handle web traffic has unleashed a wave of intense opposition.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, a Republican, announced last month that the agency would vote to undo its 2015 net neutrality rules, which prevent companies like Verizon and Comcast from blocking or slowing down websites or creating internet “fast lanes.”

December 1, 2017 | As a state representative, my job under the Constitution is to work “for the security, benefit and protection of the people … ” Right now, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is poised to make that job much harder.

The FCC wants to prohibit the Minnesota Legislature from protecting Minnesota consumers when giant internet and telecommunications companies want to take, sell and profit from their private data without consent.

https://d2omw6a1nm6pnh.cloudfront.net/images/net-neutrality-now-180.png November 30, 2017 | Yesterday’s Pew Research study led to incorrect reports.

Yesterday, the Pew Research Group released a study that triggered a number of new reports about issues within the FCC’s net neutrality comment docket. The Pew study, unfortunately, contained a number of serious inaccuracies, and lacked needed context in a way that conflated legitimate grassroots advocacy and organic online outrage with malicious attempts to manipulate the FCC docket with fraud.

“The FCC sabotaged its own public comment process for the exact purpose of sowing the type of confusion that we’re seeing now,” said Evan Greer, campaign director of Fight for the Future, “They knowingly allowed malicious actors to abuse their system and submit enormous numbers of fraudulent comments using real people’s names and addresses without their permission, and they’ve refused to cooperate with investigations or transparency laws.”

http://evergreenedigest.org/sites/default/files/FreePress%20Presents%20Save%20the%20Internet.jpgNovember 29, 2017 | Yesterday, FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai gave a speech lashing out at net neutrality supporters from web companies to celebrities. The speech comes amid the backdrop of massive and growing public backlash to Pai’s proposal to gut Title II net neutrality protections, with more than half a million phone calls to Congress through BattleForTheNet.com in the last week, and hundreds of protests planned across the country on December 7. Many have noted outrage coming from conservatives, libertarians, and members of Pai’s own party.

Monday, November 27, 2017| Say Goodbye to Net Neutrality. Say Hello to the FCC's Trickle-Down Experiment, Mike Ludwig, Truthout

Ajit Pai, the Federal Communications Commission's Trump-appointed chairman, is preparing to gut the agency's net neutrality rules. The move is part of an aggressive agenda based on the idea that slashing regulations and maximizing private profits will provide benefits for everyone else. Opponents say Pai is working for the rich and powerful and leaving the rest of us behind.

November 12, 2017 | In one of the most horrendous blows to press freedom since the anti-communist witch hunts of the 1950s, the U.S. Department of Justice has forced the news broadcaster RT America to file under the Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA).

The assault on RT America, on which I host the show “On Contact,” has nothing to do with the dissemination of Russian propaganda. It is driven by RT America’s decision to provide a platform to critics of American capitalism and imperialism, critics who lambast a system of government that can no longer be called democratic. And it is accompanied by the installation of algorithms by Google, Facebook and Twitter that divert readers away from left-wing, progressive and anti-war websites, including Truthdig. The World Socialist Web Site has seen its search traffic from Google fall by 74 percent since April. Google, in a further blow, this month removed RT from its list of “preferred” channels on YouTube. Twitter has blocked all advertising by the channel.

How Trump Brought the Political Media Class to Its Knees

  • Trump and his team understand that for the political press, the only thing that matters is what’s happening right now, not yesterday. And whether through his tweets or his surrogates in the briefing room, the president has been largely able to bait reporters into playing his game, because he knows what makes them tick.

http://www.globalresearch.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/Fake-News-400x255.jpg November 6, 2017 | The political media has failed to reckon with its biggest, most enduring challenge, which it has nothing to do with revenue or audience growth or cord-cutters. The political press is facing a crisis of substance—and it’s not just poisoning the public’s perception of journalism, it’s playing right into Trump’s hands.

The White House briefing room was constructed in 1969, a begrudging accommodation by Richard Nixon to give quarter to a growing phalanx of reporters assigned to cover the daily workings of a White House in war time. The room was placed on top of a small, indoor pool that was originally built for Franklin Roosevelt, who swam laps for therapy. John F. Kennedy was later rumored to have used the same pool for more prurient activities. It’s still under there today, albeit unfilled. If a trapdoor opened beneath Sarah Huckabee Sanders during her daily televised briefing, she would tumble directly into what was once the deep end.

Peter Hamby is the host of Snapchat’s “Good Luck America.”
