Tell Advertisers: Drop Limbaugh For Sexist Voting Rant NOW!

Tell Rush Limbaugh's advertisers: Pull your money—or we'll pull our support for your products!

Watchdog.net

Submitted by Evergreene Digest Contributing Editor Betty Culver

(July 20, 2012) Losing over forty advertisers for calling Sandra a "slut" failed to teach Rush a lesson. But now we've got a rant on tape that will let us take him down for good—his claim that letting women vote is destroying America!

"When women got the right to vote is when it all went downhill," Rush Limbaugh ranted this week. "Because that's when votes started being cast with emotion and maternal instincts!"

For years, Limbaugh has tried to brush off his racist, sexist comments as "jokes." He's held on to advertisers because of it—but no longer. Now, we're launching a second campaign to strip him of funds—and this time, we're not giving up until he's gone for good!

Join the call now, and get this hate-monger's remaining advertisers to kill his sexist, racist rants once and for all. Tell Rush Limbaugh's advertisers: Pull your money—or we'll pull our support for your products!

Julian Assange interview with Belfast Telegraph

I can try to explain why I admire him and why I think WikiLeaks is important, but it's better to hear him speak.

Climate Change: 'This Is Just the Beginning'

  • If our news media, including—or especially—the meteorologists, continue to ignore the essential link between extreme weather and climate change, then we as a nation, the greatest per capita polluters on the planet, may not act in time to avert even greater catastrophe.
  • Do You Change the Weather When You Change the Climate? Yes!

Evidence supporting the existence of climate change is pummeling the United States this summer, from the mountain wildfires of Colorado to the recent “derecho” storm that left at least 23 dead and 1.4 million people without power from Illinois to Virginia. The phrase “extreme weather” flashes across television screens from coast to coast, but its connection to climate change is consistently ignored, if not outright mocked. If our news media, including—or especially—the meteorologists, continue to ignore the essential link between extreme weather and climate change, then we as a nation, the greatest per capita polluters on the planet, may not act in time to avert even greater catastrophe.

More than 2,000 heat records were broken last week (June 24-30) around the U.S. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the government agency that tracks the data, reported that the spring of 2012 “marked the largest temperature departure from average of any season on record for the contiguous United States.” These record temperatures in May, NOAA says, “have been so dramatically different that they establish a new ‘neighborhood’ apart from the historical year-to-date temperatures.”

Verizon Wants The "Freedom" To Edit Your Internet

The promise of an open Internet is consumer choice driving innovation online. By holding out for "editorial discretion," Verizon wants to preserve their right to pick favorites, wall off the garden, and start charging for admission.

(Recently), Verizon filed a brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit laying out their various and sundry complaints against the Federal Communications Commission's Open Internet Order, which put net neutrality regulations in place for Internet service providers. The telecom giant is suing to have the FCC's order thrown out, and one of their legal arguments is raising more than a few eyebrows. Verizon, per the court document, considers itself your Internet editor. Or your Internet editor-in-waiting.

It goes like this: the Open Internet Order says that Verizon, as a provider of broadband Internet, can't block or slow access to (legal) online content because they disagree with its message or are being paid by an outside party to do so. This is essentially how the internet has operated since its inception, and the Open Internet Order is intended to prevent ISPs like Verizon from becoming gatekeepers. Verizon, however, argues that it has the constitutionally protected right to decide which content you, as a Verizon customer, can access -- that it is no different from a newspaper editor.

Was this drought caused by climate change? Yes.

FAIR has noted the tendency of corporate media to play down the connection of extreme weather to climate change. (See Neil deMause's piece in Extra!, 8/11.) This summer, as the country is beset by another devastating wave of drought and fires, the approach seems to be to acknowledge climate change–in the 10th paragraph–but end up by concluding that it's impossible to say whether there's any connection between climate change and any particular weather phenomenon. As in this L.A. Times piece (7/2/12):

Since 2000, it has not been uncommon for wildfire seasons to end with a tally of 7 million to 9 million blackened acres nationally. Though total burned acreage dropped during a few years of milder weather, it spiraled again last year when flames galloped across parched Texas.

O'Reilly as Paul Revere: The Disabled Are Coming

  • One little problem with (O'Reilly's) analysis: Disability insurance isn't paid for out of income tax–it's covered by Social Security taxes, which all workers pay. (It's actually a regressive tax, since it's not paid on income over $110,000.)

Bill O'Reilly complained last night (7/5/12) that there are too many disabled people in America:

Twenty years ago in June 1992, there were 3,300,000 Americans receiving federal disability payments. Today, 20 years later, that number is a record 8,733,000 workers on disability.

O'Reilly's not buying it for a second:

Why has the disability rate increased more than 100 percent? I'll tell you why. It's a con. It's easy to put in a bogus disability claim.
